“Hey Mum! You know Harry dated Meghan Trainor, right?” Said my son, Mike at breakfast one weekend, shortly after Meghan surprised Nauset High School with a return visit.
Many articles have been written about the rich and famous visiting the Cape; but what about the ‘not quite so famous?’ Those that don’t need body guards, humungous homes, helicopter pads and extraordinary hair dos? The people you can actually have a good laugh with? You can proudly call ‘friends’?
The first band I danced all night to and realized they were really rather good, were The Spampinato Brothers who have various different groups; NRBQ, Incredible Casuals, Rip-It-Ups to name just a few. NRBQ have been around a long time – they’re the guys who get to play at the parties of ALL the big names in Hollywood, and did you know that they were featured on the TV show The Simpsons? Good fun to see friends depicted on that show!
Watch out for Monica Rizzio – Washashore Cowgirl; Jon Evans another incredible musician had fun working on this album, (yes, I’m old school!) and he is playing alongside all sorts of famous people.
Unbelievably, a couple of years ago, Kate Maberly – a British actress who was the young star in the movie ‘The Secret Garden’; visited our home with a mutual friend, and sat down at the piano to sing and play! After the shock of this experience wore off a little, we chatted about Cape authors and how she would love to direct her own movie. I just happened to have a collection of novels by Han Nolan on hand. Han is a dear friend and a very talented author. Well known and respected, Han is an American writer of young-adult fiction. She has published nine young adult novels winning the U.S. National Book Award for Young People’s Literature in 1997 for the novel Dancing on the Edge.
I just happen to be selling Han Nolan’s family home in Dennis this month! Fabulous antique with lots of bedrooms, wonderful character and charm. Pastoral setting, close to West Dennis Beaches.
But I digress…
When visiting the Cape in the summer, be sure to visit the Melody Tent in Hyannis. They always get the best acts there and you never know who you will bump into. About 15 years ago we went to see Eddie Money. Who knew that some of his biggest fans were tennis players?! I sat right behind Bjorn Borg!! I cannot tell you how difficult it was to stop myself from tapping him on the shoulder (after brushing aside all that famous hair!!). He was sat next to Vitas Gerulaitis and Illie (Nasty) Nastase. I have to admit, I didn’t see too much of the show as it was difficult trying to eavesdrop and apparently Im not that subtle according to my husband! At the end I actually walked up the aisle next to Nastase, informing him how my sister Katie had probably been one of his biggest fans. She would have towered over them – tennis stars, are apparently really short!
How about the talented chemists who developed Carpet Fresh?! Would you like to visit the chemistry lab where that household famous product was created and the chalkboard is still covered in symbols and fractions for the latest inventions? It just happens to be the lower level of an incredible residence in Chatham that I am selling. But you wont spend too long in the lab, this house has multiple levels and the views of the water are incredible. Talk about location, location, location… this house is on Watch Hill Way. To get there? Just wander up Main Street, Chatham. Enjoy all the shops and restaurants and historic homes. Cross over Shore Drive and there is Watch Hill… unbelievable spot.
By the way, I personally, have no proof that Harry did in fact date Meagan Trainer; but I have it on good authority that they were in trumpet class together!
Stay tuned for next month’s blog which includes Belinda reminiscing about the time when she had her hand inside Elton John’s sweater…
